A kilt is to a lungi as trousers are to pyjamas. Almost there, but not quite.
For its true glory its best if the lungi were worn with a baniyan, but I am making concessions for the weather and shirts/kurtas and shervanis are permitted.
For an evening of Indian music, Indian food, and a bunch of us, it seems appropriate for the men to attend in Indian formal wear. Lungis, langothis, kacchas (with or without a tie) and the like are amusing for the discussion, but certainly dont meet the need of the occassion.

The best way out of this controversy is to wear a tartan lungi at "half-mast" along with a sporran.
That would be truly cosmopolitan, would impart a certain dash and elan, and may even end up modifying the sartorial habits of the Scots.

a tartan lungi at half mast with a sporran would be a kilt by default!! you have to do better than that!
No! No!
Nothing can compare with the glory of a lungi.
